Neighborhood Guide
Boulder, Colorado
Artsy, independent, and evolving. North Boulder (NoBo) blends a vibrant creative district with mid-century homes, modern infill, and easy access to trails and open space.
Overview
North Boulder, often called "NoBo," has a rich agricultural past and a fiercely independent character. Before the 1950s, this area was rural farmland with orchards, cattle grazing, and chicken coops. The North Boulder development was originally part of the Tyler Farm, platted into residential blocks starting in the late 1940s to sell homes to returning WWII veterans. In the 1960s, county residents even attempted to incorporate as a separate city, reflecting the area's renegade spirit.
Today, North Boulder is defined by its vibrant arts scene. The NoBo Art District is a grassroots organization promoting 220-plus artists and creative businesses along North Broadway, with First Friday art events, studios, galleries, and the NoBo Bus Stop Gallery. The neighborhood has a gritty, independent vibe that stands in contrast to Boulder's more polished areas. The mix of artist-friendly industrial warehouses, new urbanist mixed-use developments, high-end restaurants, and creative spaces gives NoBo a unique, eclectic character.
North Boulder offers a range of housing options from mid-century ranch homes to modern infill construction, with the Flatirons providing a stunning backdrop to the south. Wonderland Lake, originally created for flood control, is now a popular open space and wildlife sanctuary at the neighborhood's northern edge. The area has seen significant reinvestment in recent years, with new restaurants, breweries, and mixed-use developments transforming the Broadway corridor.
AJ's Take
"North Boulder has a spirit you will not find anywhere else in Boulder. It is where artists, innovators, and families who value authenticity over polish come together. The NoBo Art District is one of the most exciting developments in Boulder, and the neighborhood's mix of mid-century homes and new construction offers great options for buyers. I have helped many clients find their place in this unique community."
