Overview
Downtown Boulder centers on the Pearl Street Mall, a four-block pedestrian mall stretching from 11th to 15th Streets along Pearl Street. Established in 1977 after a citizen vote in 1973, the mall transformed a declining downtown into a vibrant car-free zone lined with red bricks. The area dates back to 1859 when Boulder was founded as a supply town for gold miners, and Pearl Street served as its main commercial thoroughfare.
The Downtown Boulder Historic District encompasses 48 acres and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Notable landmarks include the Boulder County Courthouse, the historic Hotel Boulderado (built 1909), and the Boulder Theater (originally the Curran Opera House, opened 1906, with its iconic Art Deco facade added in 1936).
